The 30-year-old Dane suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark in the 2020 Euros. The former Spurs midfielder collapsed mid-game against Finland in June and was advised to retire from football. However, he made a shock move back to the Premier League. He signed for The Bees in January. He is set to make his debut for them tomorrow as they host Newcastle.
In an emotional interview after the incident, Christian Eriksen has admitted he “died for five minutes” before being revived by medics on the pitch. He later had an ICD device, a type of pacemaker, inserted into his heart.
At that time, he was playing for Italian giants, Inter Milan F.C. He was forced to leave them as Italian Football regulations forbid players with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) to play Seria A games. Although he was banned from Serie A, he was adamant to play football once again after he was cleared of all risks.
Before his move to Brentford, Eriksen slowly started recovery and trained with Ajax reserves. The moment he long-awaited for has finally come and he is nothing short of ecstatic. “I feel very good. It was a tough test in the last week or so with the game against Southend,” he told Brentford’s website.
“I feel like I’m in a good place mentally going into the games and body wise, which is the most important at the moment. “A round warm of applause is anticipated from the Brentford fans and fans from all over the world as he makes his emotional return to football.
