Despite a starting goal from Julian Álvarez for Atlético in the first half, second half sees two from Espanyol and they got the three points. It was a tough start to the season for Diego Simeone, but the team looks fired up and ready to bounce back in the next one.

Atlético Madrid endured a disappointing start to their La Liga 2025/26 campaign as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Espanyol on Sunday night.

The visitors looked in control during the first half when summer signing Julián Álvarez opened the scoring, giving Diego Simeone’s men a deserved lead. However, the second half turned the contest on its head as Espanyol responded with two well-taken goals, securing all three points in front of their home crowd.

It was far from the start Atlético had hoped for, but Simeone will take heart from the team’s early attacking intent and determination. With plenty of matches ahead, Los Rojiblancos will aim to regroup quickly and bounce back in their next outing.
