The reigning world champions, Argentina, are set to defend their flawless Group A record in the Copa America as they take on Peru at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, on Saturday night.

Argentina has already booked their spot in the knockout rounds, but Peru faces a do-or-die situation; they must win to keep their tournament hopes alive.

Argentina was the first team to secure a quarterfinal berth with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chile in New Jersey. Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, having previously made an impact as a substitute in the 2-0 win over Canada.

With six points from two matches, Lionel Scaloni’s squad has secured a top-two finish in Group A. However, a win on Saturday would guarantee them the top spot in their group for the first time since 2016.

Peru, on the other hand, finds itself in a precarious position. The 2019 runners-up and 2021 semifinalists are at risk of an early exit, a fate they haven’t faced since 1995. After a 0-0 draw with Chile and a 1-0 loss to Canada, they have just one point. Miguel Araujo’s red card against Canada was costly, leaving Peru’s offense struggling to find the net.

Currently at the bottom of Group A, level on points with Chile, Peru needs a victory over Argentina and a draw between Canada and Chile to advance. Scoring has been a major issue for Peru, as they haven’t managed a goal in their last four encounters with Argentina, making Saturday’s challenge even tougher.

However, Peru received a boost with the news that Lionel Messi will be absent from the Argentina lineup due to an injury sustained against Chile.
