The NFL preseason is already in full swing, and teams are beginning to deal with injuries as the 2024 season approaches.
One of the latest concerns is with Detroit Lions’ star running back Jahmyr Gibbs. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Gibbs suffered a hamstring injury during practice on Monday. The extent of the injury and how long Gibbs will be out are still unclear.
Gibbs had an impressive rookie season in 2023, earning Pro Bowl honors. He rushed for 945 yards and 10 touchdowns, added 316 receiving yards and another score, and was a key player in the Lions’ run to the NFC Championship game. He even received votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Here’s what you need to know about Gibbs’ injury:
Injury Update:
Gibbs’ injury is being described as a hamstring issue. Details on how severe the injury is and how long he might be sidelined are still uncertain.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism about Gibbs’ recovery, saying, “I think we’re gonna be fine here. So, I think we’ll be good,” though he didn’t provide specifics.
Gibbs has had hamstring problems before. He missed two games last October due to a similar issue and had to sit out some spring workouts because of an unspecified soft-tissue injury. He returned to action on July 27, after missing from early June.
In addition to Gibbs, rookie cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. were also injured during practice.
Role and Impact:
Gibbs is expected to share running back duties with David Montgomery this season. Montgomery had more snaps last season (219 vs. 182 for Gibbs), but Gibbs averaged more yards per carry (5.2 vs. 4.6) and was more involved in the passing game with 52 receptions compared to Montgomery’s 16.
The Lions lost their Week 1 preseason game 14-3 to the Giants, and Gibbs did not play. Detroit’s next preseason game is against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 17.
