Pittsburgh Steelers running back Jaylen Warren will be out for “multiple weeks” due to a hamstring injury he suffered during the preseason Week 2 game against the Buffalo Bills, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. This puts Warren’s availability for Week 1 of the regular season in doubt, though the exact duration of his absence is still uncertain.
Warren had a standout 2023 season, setting career highs in rushing yards (784), receiving yards (370), and touchdowns (four). He was expected to play a significant role in the Steelers’ offense in 2024 alongside Najee Harris.
With Warren sidelined, Harris will likely see an increased workload. Harris has been the primary running back for the past three seasons, but Warren’s absence could put more pressure on him to carry the load. Last season, Warren had over 200 touches and was a key part of the offense.
The Steelers also have other running backs competing for roster spots, including Jonathan Ward, La’Mical Perine, Daijun Edwards, Aaron Shampklin, and Cordarrelle Patterson. However, Ward is also dealing with a hamstring injury, and Patterson has just returned from an injury.
In addition to Warren’s injury, the Steelers lost cornerback Anthony Verrett (hamstring) and linebacker Payton Wilson (concussion) during the same game. Head coach Mike Tomlin also mentioned that cornerback Beanie Bishop (undisclosed) was hurt and did not play in the game.
Warren will have three weeks to recover before the regular-season opener. The Steelers have one more preseason game on Saturday, August 24, against the Detroit Lions, with their regular-season opener against the Atlanta Falcons scheduled for Sunday, September 8.
