Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda was left frustrated after a difficult qualifying session in Las Vegas, describing the track conditions as “like ice” following his P19 result in Q1.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live’s Rosanna Tennant after the session, Tsunoda admitted he had no explanations for the severe lack of grip he experienced.
Tsunoda said:
“It was very tricky but at the same time I don’t know why but I just struggled with the grip overall.
It was very strange, like ice. I don’t know what has happened specifically but clearly something isn’t working.”
The Japanese driver, who had shown promising pace earlier in the season, was unable to extract performance from the car in the wet, heavily flooded conditions that caught several drivers off-guard in Q1 — including Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon, who also dropped out early.
Tsunoda will now start Sunday’s Grand Prix from P19, with Red Bull engineers set to investigate the grip issues ahead of the race.
