After another trophyless yet rebuilding season for Manchester United, club legend Gary Neville has called on the hierarchy to properly support captain Bruno Fernandes in the transfer market.
Fernandes has delivered one of the finest individual Premier League campaigns in recent years despite United’s struggles over the last few seasons. With only one game remaining this season, the Portuguese midfielder has created more than 130 chances, almost double the tally of Dominik Szoboszlai, who sits second on the list.
The United captain has also registered 20 assists this season, the highest by any player since Kevin De Bruyne achieved similar numbers during his peak years at Manchester City.
Speaking during an interview, Neville praised Fernandes for his commitment and mentality during difficult moments at Old Trafford. The former United defender said the club must now repay the midfielder’s loyalty by bringing in quality signings capable of turning the team into genuine title challengers again.
Carrick guided the club to a third-place Premier League finish and secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
However, despite the strong finish, there is growing belief around the club that Carrick will need major backing in the summer transfer window if United are to return to the top of English football.
