In a significant development for Chelsea and Ukrainian football, the Football Association (FA) has imposed a four-year ban on winger Mykhailo Mudryk following an anti-doping violation, as reported by Ben Jacobs. The decision is now being appealed in CAS.

Mudryk, who joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in a high-profile £88.5 million move in January 2023, has not played competitive football since November 2024. He was provisionally suspended after an adverse finding in a routine urine test, linked to the presence of meldonium — a substance banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2016.

The FA formally charged him in June 2025 with breaching anti-doping regulations. Under the rules, a finding of intentional use can result in a ban of up to four years, though the exact length can vary depending on factors such as intent, mitigation, and any time already served under the provisional suspension.

A Difficult Chapter for a Talented Player

At just 25 years old, Mudryk was once seen as one of the most exciting young attackers in European football. His pace, dribbling ability, and flair earned him comparisons with some of the game’s top wingers, and Ukraine fans had high hopes for him on the international stage.

This ban represents a major setback — not just for Mudryk personally, but also for Chelsea, who have continued to support him through the process while he trains separately. Many in the football community view the situation as unfortunate, highlighting how quickly a promising career can face serious challenges.

Mudryk has consistently maintained his innocence, stating that he never knowingly used any banned substances and that he is working with his team to understand how the substance entered his system.
