Zimbabwe’s veteran batter Brendan Taylor, making his long-awaited comeback to international cricket after serving a three-and-a-half-year ban, suffered a setback in the opening ODI against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club on Friday, August 29.
The 39-year-old, who returned to the ODI side — the format in which he has been most prolific for Zimbabwe — had taken the field as wicketkeeper in the series opener. However, Taylor injured one of his fingers early in Sri Lanka’s innings and was forced to walk off, handing the gloves to Clive Madande.
It was a disappointing turn of events for fans, who were eager to see the former captain back in action. Taylor’s presence had added weight to Zimbabwe’s batting lineup, with hopes pinned on his experience and proven record in the 50-over format.
At the time of his exit, Sri Lanka had reached 9/0 in 2.2 overs after Zimbabwe opted to bowl first. While the extent of Taylor’s injury is still unclear, Zimbabwe supporters will be anxious to know whether the comeback man can take further part in the series.
