The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has recommended imposing a fine of £500,000 ($636,600) and deducting points from Yorkshire Cricket Club due to their mishandling of racism allegations made by former player Azeem Rafiq.
Yorkshire had admitted to four charges of bringing the game into disrepute. Rafiq, a former England Under-19s captain of Pakistani descent, had testified about his experience of institutional racism at Yorkshire during a parliamentary committee hearing in 2021.
The proposed sporting sanctions include deducting between 48 to 72 points in the County Championship and four to six points each in the One-Day Cup and T20 Blast.
Yorkshire’s lawyer argued that the club had already suffered enough and requested the panel to take that into account. The final decision will be announced in July.
Earlier in May, six former Yorkshire players were sanctioned by the independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) for using racist slurs, while former England captain Michael Vaughan was cleared of such allegations.
