Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami expressed his belief that the umpires should have conducted a more thorough review of Cameron Green’s catch before giving Shubman Gill out. During the fourth day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, Gill, batting on 18 with two boundaries, fell victim to Scott Boland’s bowling.

Gill edged the ball, and Green made a left-handed grab, immediately erupting in celebration. However, upon reviewing the replays, it appeared inconclusive as to whether Green had his fingers under the ball while taking the catch. Nonetheless, the third umpire deemed the catch clean and gave Gill out. Shami opined that considering the significance of a match as momentous as the WTC final, the umpires should have taken more time to reach a decision.

“In a match like the World Test Championship final, they could have taken some time. It should have been examined more closely, zoomed in. But it’s alright, it’s part of the game,” Shami stated.

He added, “It’s nothing major. This is part of the game. The umpires make the decision. So, it’s part of the game. We don’t dwell on it too much. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.”

At the end of Day 4, India stood at 164 for the loss of three wickets. Chasing a target of 444 in the fourth innings, Rohit Sharma’s team required 280 runs to secure victory with seven wickets remaining in their second innings. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane will resume batting on the final day, having forged a partnership of 91 runs for the fourth wicket.
