Despite relinquishing the ODI captaincy in 2021, Virat Kohli has been appointed as the captain of the Cricket Australia’s Team of the Tournament for the World Cup 2023. Kohli, currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament, will lead the World XI, a surprising twist that places him ahead of contenders like Kane Williamson and Rohit Sharma.
Cricket Australia’s selected squad for the Team of the Tournament includes:
1. Quinton De Kock (WK) – 591 runs
2. David Warner – 499 runs
3. Rachin Ravindra – 565 runs and 5 wickets
4. Virat Kohli (C) – 594 runs and 1 wicket
5. Aiden Markram – 396 runs
6. Glenn Maxwell – 396 runs and 5 wickets
7. Marco Jansen – 157 runs and 17 wickets
8. Ravindra Jadeja – 111 runs and 17 wickets
9. Mohammed Shami – 17 wickets
10. Adam Zampa – 22 wickets
11. Jasprit Bumrah – 17 wickets
12. Dilshan Madushanka (12th man) – 21 wickets
A notable exclusion from the squad is Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who did not find a place in the 12-man lineup despite outscoring David Warner in the tournament. Another surprising choice is the selection of Aiden Markram to bat at number 5, overlooking the performances of KL Rahul and Heinrich Klassen.
