The Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 has grabbed attention with senior stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma returning to domestic cricket, but one of the tournament’s biggest talking points has been 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Representing Bihar, the teenage sensation made headlines after smashing a historic century in the opening match against Arunachal Pradesh. However, fans noticed his absence in Bihar’s second fixture against Manipur—and the youngster will not feature again in the tournament.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi has travelled to New Delhi to attend the Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award ceremony, where he will be honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to his childhood coach Manish Ojha, Suryavanshi had to report early in the morning for the ceremony, forcing him to miss the Manipur match.
“Vaibhav won’t play today’s match because he is in Delhi to attend the Prime Minister’s National Children’s Award ceremony. He will be honoured at the event and had to report at 7 AM,” Ojha told Hindustan Times.
Why Vaibhav Suryavanshi will miss the rest of the Vijay Hazare Trophy
Suryavanshi’s absence is not limited to just one game. After the Bihar vs Manipur clash, the young batter will link up with India’s Under-19 squad ahead of the Under-19 World Cup, which begins on January 15 in Zimbabwe. As part of the preparation phase, he will take part in training camps and preparatory matches, ruling him out of the remaining Vijay Hazare Trophy fixtures.
“He will miss the remainder of the Vijay Hazare Trophy because he has to get in sync for the Under-19 World Cup and will join the Indian team for preparatory matches,” Ojha added.
Historic knock that made headlines
Before his departure, Suryavanshi left an indelible mark on the tournament. He hammered 190 runs off just 84 balls against Arunachal Pradesh, striking at an astonishing 226.19. His innings included 15 sixes and 16 fours, showcasing power-hitting rarely seen at this level.
The knock also saw him create history by becoming the fastest batter to score 150 runs in List A cricket, reaching the milestone in just 54 balls. In the process, he broke AB de Villiers’ long-standing record, who had reached 150 off 64 balls during his unbeaten 162 against West Indies in the 2015 ODI World Cup.
While Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign has been cut short, his focus now shifts to the global stage, with the Under-19 World Cup offering another platform for India’s teenage sensation to shine.
