In a move that has taken the cricketing world by surprise, West Indies batter and former captain Nicholas Pooran announced his retirement from international cricket at just 29 years old. Pooran, one of the most explosive wicketkeeper-batters of his generation, made the revelation via an emotional post on Instagram, stating that after much reflection, he has decided to end his international journey.
“This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories,” Pooran wrote. “To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”
Pooran played 61 ODIs and 106 T20Is for West Indies from 2016 to 2024, scoring 1,983 runs in ODIs with three centuries and 11 fifties, and 2,275 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 136.39. He is the most capped West Indian in T20Is and their highest run-scorer in the format.
While he cited no specific reason for the early retirement, Pooran had recently opted out of the team’s tours to Ireland and England, citing a need for rest. Some observers suggest the increasing demands of franchise cricket may have influenced the decision, as he remains in high demand globally in leagues like the IPL.
“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade,” he said, expressing continued support for the team and region.
Cricket West Indies acknowledged his retirement, stating, “Nicholas leaves the game as a world-class player and a game changer, with a lasting impact on West Indies cricket.”
Pooran’s sudden exit leaves many wondering if this is a permanent goodbye, or a pause before a possible future return.
