Yuvraj backs next generation to challenge 12-ball fifty record
Yuvraj Singh believes his record for the fastest fifty in T20 internationals will not stand forever and expects the current generation to push past it. The mark, set during the ICC T20 World Cup 2007, has now stood for nearly two decades.
He said several players have already come close, with fifties scored in 14 or 15 balls in recent years. With higher scoring rates, improved equipment and a more attacking approach, he feels the gap is narrowing. According to him, it is only a matter of time before someone goes beyond that 12-ball effort.
Suryavanshi and Abhishek lead the next wave
Yuvraj pointed to young hitters like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma as players capable of challenging the record. He also mentioned Hardik Pandya for his ability to score quickly under pressure.
Recent IPL performances, especially in the powerplay, have shown how aggressive batting has become. Players are taking risks early, targeting boundaries from the start, and pushing totals higher than before.
Mentorship shaping aggressive batting approach
Yuvraj’s view carries weight given his work with younger players. He has trained and mentored several Indian batters, including Abhishek, Shubman Gill, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh.
His focus has been on intent and clarity in shot selection, key aspects for rapid scoring. He said he would be happy to see the record broken, adding that such moments help the game move forward.
Record stands, but pressure is building
Yuvraj admitted he still cannot fully explain how that innings came together, including the over where he hit six sixes. But he expects someone to go one better soon.
With modern T20 cricket favouring aggressive batting and higher strike rates, the conditions are in place. The question is no longer if the record will be broken, but when.
