India were handed a fresh injury scare on Day 4 of the second Test in Guwahati after fast bowler Mohammed Siraj walked off the field clutching his right shoulder, leaving the team and fans deeply concerned. The incident occurred during the 75th over of South Africa’s second innings, when Siraj dived awkwardly while attempting to stop a ball near the boundary.

How the injury happened

The moment unfolded when Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled to Tristan Stubbs, who flicked the ball toward deep backward square-leg. Siraj sprinted across to make the stop but misjudged the bounce and had to dive late, landing heavily on his right elbow and shoulder.

He immediately clutched his shoulder, grimaced in pain, and stayed down for several seconds. Physiotherapists rushed in as teammates gathered around him. After a brief assessment, Siraj slowly got to his feet but was unable to continue, walking off the field looking visibly distressed.

Why this is a major concern

Siraj has been India’s most consistent bowler in this series, delivering long spells in extreme heat and carrying the bulk of the pace workload. With India already trailing by more than 530 runs and staring at a possible innings defeat, losing another bowler only worsens their troubles.

His injury also comes at a time when:

  • Rishabh Pant suffered a foot pain scare earlier in the day.

  • India are playing with an inexperienced bowling attack featuring two debutants.

  • South Africa’s lead continues to grow with no signs of declaration yet.

What we know so far

Initial signs suggest it could be a shoulder or elbow impact injury, but the extent remains unclear. The team management has not issued an official update yet.

Siraj remained off the field for the remainder of the session, and India substituted a fielder in his place.

India’s nightmare worsens

With South Africa’s lead stretching beyond 530 and their batters settling comfortably, India’s hopes in this Test—and the series—now look heavily dented. If Siraj does not return to bowl, India may face another long and painful grind in the field.

Further updates on Siraj’s condition are awaited from the Indian team management.
