T20I matches are popularly known as high-scoring matches in nature. Compared to the other two formats of the game, bowlers face so much pressure and difficulty in restricting the batsmen to score runs in the shortest format.

In T20I cricket, where high-scoring games are the norm, it’s a rare and remarkable achievement for bowlers to claim a maiden over, especially in their debut match.

The pressure of restricting runs in the shortest format can be overwhelming, and when a bowler manages to deliver a maiden over on their first attempt, it’s a testament to their skill and composure under pressure. It’s moments like these that make you think—sometimes, a debutant’s first over can create a sense of magic, setting the tone for the rest of their career. Let’s take a look at the Indian bowlers who claimed ‘Maiden Over’ in their T20I career’s first over

1. Ajit Agarkar Against South Africa in 2006

Ajit Agarkar scripted history with the record of first Indian bowler to bowl a maiden over in the first match over of his T20 career. He achieved this record in 2006 against South Africa at Johannesburg.

Ajit Agarkar got the chance to bowl in the sixth over during South Africa’s innings. He got the prestigious wicket of the legend Herschelle Gibbs on his first ball and then bowled five more balls without letting Justin Kemp score. It was called a maiden over, and India won the match by six wickets.

2. Arshdeep Singh Against  England in 2022

The sensational left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh became the second Indian player to bowl a maiden over in his first T20I match. He achieved this feat against England in Southampton in 2022.

Arshdeep bowled the second over for England’s innings. He made it hard for opener Jason Roy with his swing and didn’t give up any runs off the bat (there were two leg byes) in six balls and got the maiden over.

Arshdeep had a great debut in T20I cricket. He took two wickets in 3.3 overs, and India won the match against England by 50 runs.

3. Mayank Yadav Against Bangladesh in 2024

Young star fast bowler Mayank Yadav shocked everyone in the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2024. He consistently bowled over 145 km/h and won two Player of the Match awards in his first two games.

Mayank played his first T20I match against Bangladesh in Gwalior in October 2024. He became one of the few Indian bowlers to bowl a maiden over in their first T20I debut. He bowled a maiden over to Towhid Hridoy, who struggled to score any runs from six balls because of Mayank’s outstanding speed.
