The Supreme Court of India has sought responses from Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami and the West Bengal government on a petition filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance awarded to her and their daughter.
A bench of the apex court, while hearing the matter, made an oral observation that the maintenance amount granted by the Calcutta High Court appeared “quite handsome” for an interim arrangement.
The Calcutta High Court, in its earlier order, had directed Shami to pay a total of Rs 4 lakh per month as maintenance — Rs 1.5 lakh to Hasin Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter. Jahan has now approached the Supreme Court, contending that the amount awarded is insufficient given Shami’s income and lifestyle.
The court issued notices to both Shami and the state government, seeking their responses to the plea. The case stems from a long-standing legal dispute between the couple following their separation, which has involved multiple allegations and proceedings in civil and criminal courts.
The matter will be listed for further hearing after the responses are filed.
