After the announcement of Virat Kohli stepping down as T20 skipper the former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar believes that Rohit Sharma would be an ideal candidate to lead team India in the next world cup and KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant can be groomed to be the vice-captain in the shortest format of the game by Indian team management.
Gavaskar on Stars Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’ said: “I think Rohit Sharma (should be the captain) for the next two world cups because they are back to back, one starting next month and another in a year from now, yes you don’t want to change captains at this particular stage but Rohit would be my choice for captaincy in both these world cup and then, I’m looking at KL Rahul to be as vice-captain.”
Gavaskar further added, “I would also keep Rishab Pant in mind because he has impressed in the way he has lead Delhi Capitals team and the bowling changes that he has been making in the T20 format using Rabada and Nortje in such a clever manner that shows a street smart captain so yes Rahul and pant are the two guys I would look forward as vice-captain.”
Earlier this month Virat Kohli announced that he will be stepping down as the captain of the Indian cricket team in the T20 format, Kohli explained this through his statement on social media the Indian skipper said that he needs to give himself space to play all three formats for the country.
