In a dedicated training session under the keen observation of India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer honed his skills against short balls in Mumbai, preparing for the upcoming World Cup face-off against Sri Lanka. The practice, reported by The Indian Express, showcased Iyer’s determination as he faced throwdown specialist Nuwan Seneviratne in two separate net sessions.
During the initial session, Iyer displayed his intent by attempting to dispatch short deliveries for sixes, aiming over the left side of the net and consistently clearing the stands. Despite discussions with the Sri Lankan thrower, Iyer persisted in elevating the ball, refusing to keep it grounded.
In the subsequent session, the thrower varied the angle, delivering short balls below chest height outside off stump. Adapting swiftly, Iyer redirected his shots towards the side-net, recognizing the lack of bounce in those deliveries. This focused training was a response to Iyer’s recent struggles against short-pitched deliveries, a weakness exploited by Mark Wood, resulting in his dismissal for a mere four runs against England.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill opted out of India’s optional nets session, while KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Ravindra Jadeja actively practiced their batting skills. Ravichandran Ashwin engaged in bowling practice, supported by net bowlers and throwdown specialists.
India remains unbeaten in the World Cup, securing victories against formidable opponents like Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, and England. Following the Sri Lanka match, India is set to face South Africa on November 5 and Netherlands on November 12, concluding the league stage with high hopes.
