In a major setback for Indian cricket, ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney after suffering a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding during the third ODI against Australia. What appeared to be a routine fall while taking a sharp catch off Alex Carey’s shot has turned into one of the most serious injuries of his career.
According to reports, Iyer briefly lost consciousness in the dressing room, with his vitals dropping before being rushed to the hospital by the medical staff. Scans revealed internal bleeding, and he was immediately admitted to the ICU. He will remain under observation for at least a week as BCCI’s medical team and specialists in Sydney continue to monitor his recovery.
Sources told PTI that the quick response from the medical team prevented the situation from turning fatal. “Shreyas has been in the ICU for the past couple of days. Internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He’s stable now, but recovery will take time,” the source said.
Initially, Iyer was expected to miss around three weeks, but the severity of the injury has extended his recovery timeline to two to three months, ruling him out of all cricketing action during that period.
This means Iyer is set to miss:
| Series | Schedule |
|---|---|
| India vs South Africa (3 ODIs) | Nov 30 – Dec 6 |
| Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy | Nov 26 – Dec 18 |
| Vijay Hazare Trophy | Dec 24 – Jan 18 |
| India vs New Zealand (3 ODIs) | Jan 11 – 18 |
The 30-year-old batter has been a vital cog in India’s ODI lineup, anchoring the number four position since 2022 with 1,430 runs at an average of 55. His injury comes at a crucial time as India prepares for key home series in the coming months.
“Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” the source added.
