India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill has put an end to speculation regarding skipper Rohit Sharma’s potential retirement, confirming that Rohit has not discussed any such plans with the team. Speaking on the eve of the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand in Dubai, Gill stated, “Till now, we have only been discussing winning the match and the Champions Trophy. He has not spoken to me or the team about this. I don’t think Rohit is thinking about it.”
Rohit’s future has been a hot topic, especially after he retired from T20Is following India’s World Cup win in Barbados last year. With the Champions Trophy final presenting another significant milestone, many anticipated an announcement regarding his ODI or international retirement. However, Gill’s clarification suggests that Rohit remains focused solely on the final.
Gill also provided insights into the pitch conditions at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS), stating that despite the soaring daytime heat, the wicket is unlikely to change drastically. He noted that dew could play a role in the night match, but India has already played and won four matches at this venue in the tournament, giving them an advantage.
Discussing the pressure of the final, Gill acknowledged the stakes but emphasized that experience plays a key role in handling such situations. Citing Virat Kohli’s composed innings of 84 runs in the semifinal, Gill explained that seasoned players thrive in high-pressure matches due to their familiarity with the demands of the occasion.
The young opener started the tournament strongly with a century against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan but has struggled in the last two games, scoring just 2 and 8 runs against New Zealand and Australia, respectively. Ahead of the final, he spent an extended session in the nets with Rohit Sharma at the ICC Academy, while other teammates focused on light fielding and bowling drills at the match venue.
With India aiming to win their first Champions Trophy since 2013, all eyes will be on Rohit and Gill to provide a solid foundation in the final against New Zealand.
