Ravichandran Ashwin, the top-ranked Test bowler in the world, found himself out of the Indian team’s playing XI for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, which sparked widespread discussion. Now, the off-spinner has broken his silence on the decision, expressing his desire to have been a part of the title-decider. Ashwin, known for his self-criticism, opened up about the team management’s heartbreaking call and discussed his overseas performances in recent years.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Ashwin acknowledged his disappointment at not being selected for the WTC final, considering his contribution to the team’s journey. He mentioned his previous performance in a final where he took four wickets and bowled exceptionally well, further emphasizing his desire to be on the field for such crucial matches.
Addressing the criticisms surrounding his overseas performances, Ashwin stated that since the 2018-19 season, his bowling record in foreign conditions has been exceptional. He emphasized that he has played a significant role in winning games for the team during overseas tours. Reflecting from the perspective of a captain or coach, he acknowledged the team management’s decision to opt for a pace-heavy attack in the WTC final, considering the conditions and the importance of the fourth innings. Ashwin highlighted the need for runs on the board to allow a spinner to come into play and explained that it is a matter of mindset and strategy.
Ashwin, a seasoned and accomplished bowler, asserted that he does not pay much attention to external opinions and judgments. He emphasized the importance of self-evaluation and stated that he knows his capabilities and shortcomings. Being his own best critic, he strives to improve and constantly work on his skills.
