Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has officially announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL). The veteran off-spinner shared the news on social media platform X, confirming that he will now explore opportunities in cricket leagues around the world.
Ashwin ends his illustrious IPL career as the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the tournament’s history, with 187 wickets in 221 matches. Over 14 seasons, he represented multiple franchises, including Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. Fittingly, his last stint came with CSK, the team where he made his IPL debut back in 2009.
According to reports, Ashwin had already informed Chennai Super Kings a couple of weeks ago about his decision, asking the management to provide clarity on his role. If the team did not see him fitting into their future plans, he preferred to part ways amicably.
“Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin wrote in his post, thanking all franchises, the IPL and the BCCI for the platform and memories over the years.
With this announcement, Ashwin becomes one of the biggest Indian names to shift focus towards global T20 leagues, adding a new chapter to his celebrated cricket career.
