Ravi Shastri expresses frustration over IPL and team India’s duty conflict

In a recent interview with Star Sports, Ravi Shastri, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, voiced his frustration and urged the players to prioritize their commitments between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and national duty. Shastri emphasized the need for players to make a clear choice between franchise cricket and representing their country.

Speaking passionately, Shastri stated, “You must set your priorities, right? What is the priority? India or franchise cricket? You have to decide that. If you say franchise cricket, then forget this (WTC final). If this is important, then as the custodian of the sport, the BCCI are the bosses.” He further suggested the inclusion of a clause in IPL contracts that allows the BCCI to withdraw players in the interest of the national team.

Shastri’s concern about workload management and player form during the IPL season is not new. He has consistently urged players selected for the World Test Championship (WTC) final to be mindful of their physical and mental well-being amidst the demanding nature of the IPL. The coach has also conveyed similar messages to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the selectors, requesting their involvement in coordinating with the franchises to prioritize the WTC final.

His statements highlight the delicate balance between club and national cricket and the need for a collaborative approach. Shastri believes that the BCCI, as the governing body of Indian cricket, should assert its authority and ensure that the national team’s interests are safeguarded. He suggests that the BCCI should implement necessary clauses in IPL contracts, giving them the right to withdraw players when required.
