India suffered a major setback in their Champions Trophy 2025 clash against New Zealand, losing both openers within the first six overs. Rohit Sharma (15 off 17) and Shubman Gill (0 off 5) were dismissed early, leaving India struggling at 22/2 in 5.1 overs after being put in to bat at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Rohit Sharma falls after a cautious start

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who had started cautiously, failed to convert his start into a substantial score. Facing Kyle Jamieson in the sixth over, Rohit attempted to work a delivery towards mid-wicket but ended up chipping it straight to Will Young, who took a comfortable catch. His 15-run knock included one four and one six, but his early dismissal has put pressure on India’s middle order.

Shubman Gill departs for a duck

Earlier, Shubman Gill (0 off 5) fell cheaply to Matt Henry in just the third over. The right-hander was caught behind while attempting to push at a delivery that moved away slightly, giving New Zealand an early breakthrough.

Score at the time of dismissal:

  • India: 22/2 (5.1 overs)
  • Virat Kohli: 4* (7)
  • Kyle Jamieson: 2.1-0-4-1
  • Matt Henry: 3-0-18-1

With both openers dismissed, the responsibility now falls on Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer to rebuild India’s innings against a disciplined New Zealand attack. Can India recover from this early setback? Stay tuned for live updates.
