Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar is likely to be appointed as the new chairman of the BCCI Selection Committee. Agarkar, who had been the front-runner for the role on two previous occasions but withdrew, is now free from IPL commitments and eager to take on the high-pressure job.
As per the reports, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is scheduled to conduct interviews starting from July 1. The BCCI is seeking someone with the ability to challenge the team management’s decisions and T20 cricket experience.
Agarkar’s extensive international and IPL playing experience makes him the most qualified candidate. If appointed, Agarkar would join Salil Ankola as one of two selectors from the West Zone, and his superior Test match experience would automatically elevate him to the chief selector’s role.
The BCCI aims to finalize the selection committee before the Asia Cup in August, with the upcoming World Cup 2023 being a crucial tournament.
Apart from Agarkar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier approached Sehwag regarding the role, but negotiations have encountered a hurdle due to the proposed remuneration from the board. Sehwag was reportedly seeking better financial terms that align with the demanding responsibilities of the selector’s position. Nevertheless, he too remains a highly regarded choice for the role.
Following the departure of Chetan Sharma six months ago, the BCCI has actively been in pursuit of the next chief selector. According to the BCCI constitution, the chairman of the selection committee must be from the North Zone, in line with Chetan Sharma’s representation. Currently, the chairman of the selection panel receives an annual salary of INR 1 crore, while other selectors earn INR 90 lakh.
