Reports have revealed that Indian cricketers, including captain Rohit Sharma, were not subjected to the Bronco test during their recent assessments at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. While Team India’s strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux had suggested introducing the new fitness drill alongside the Yo-Yo test, players underwent only routine check-ups, mobility and agility assessments, and the Yo-Yo test.

What the report says

According to Times of India, the Bronco test could still be conducted when the Indian squad assembles in Dubai for the Asia Cup 2025. “It could happen when the squad assembles in Dubai for the Asia Cup. If the management and the S&C want to do a Bronco assessment, it could happen in Dubai. If at all it happens,” a source told the publication.

The Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is set to begin its Asia Cup campaign against hosts UAE on September 10, with training sessions scheduled at ICC Academy from September 5.

Conflicting claims

Contrary to the latest report, earlier claims suggested that some contracted players had already taken the Bronco test in Bengaluru. Sources indicated that the new test was introduced to raise running standards, particularly among fast bowlers, after concerns they were spending more time in the gym than on endurance work.

The bigger picture

The Bronco test, commonly used in rugby and football, involves running repeated 20, 40, and 60-meter shuttles to assess aerobic capacity and endurance. It was being considered as an additional benchmark for Indian cricketers, who have long been tested via the Yo-Yo test.
