In place of the injured Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh chose batsman Liton Das as skipper on Friday for the upcoming one-day series against India. Beginning on Sunday in Dhaka, the three-game series will also feature two Test matches for the visitors during their one-month stay. Tamim, the team’s regular captain, suffered a groin injury during a practice match in the capital on Wednesday and was forced to withdraw from the ODI series. According to a statement from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), he is also questionable for the Test series.

Das has been a reliable run-scorer since making his Test debut in 2015, although he has never captained Bangladesh in a 50-over or ODI match. In a Twenty20 encounter against New Zealand last year, he served as captain for the first time.

“Liton is one of the more experienced players in the side and has demonstrated leadership qualities. He has a sharp cricketing mind and reads the game well,” BCB cricket operations chief Jalal Yunus said in a statement.
