Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara expressed his admiration for Ben Stokes’ captaincy, despite England’s narrow two-wicket defeat to Australia in the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Sangakkara commended Stokes and Brendon McCullum for their aggressive approach, which was evident as England declared at 393/8 on Day 1, setting Australia a target of 281 in the second innings.
Stokes implemented some intriguing and intense field placements against Australia, notably the one employed to dismiss Usman Khawaja on Day 3. Although England failed to secure the final ten wickets, allowing Australia to stage a remarkable comeback from 227 for 8, Sangakkara remained effusive in his praise for Stokes.
During an interview with Sky Sports on the Ashes Podcast, Sangakkara lauded Stokes’ proactive and expressive captaincy, not just in the first Test but throughout. He highlighted the dynamic partnership between Stokes and McCullum, emphasizing the positive impact it has had on England’s performance.
Sangakkara stated, “Ben Stokes is free-flowing, he is expressive, he doesn’t let the game drift. But how he and McCullum kind of meet their minds and settle on tactics is why it’s so attractive out there. And that partnership has paid dividends to England.” He further added, “I loved Stokes’ captaincy not just in this particular match but throughout. Stokes especially should be very proud and very happy with the way they played.”
While acknowledging that Stokes might be disappointed with the result, Sangakkara supported England’s Bazball ideology, emphasizing that their approach is not merely impulsive but entails meticulous planning behind the scenes. He recognized the incredible performance put forth by England and their ability to play in a free-flowing manner.
Despite the loss, Stokes’ captaincy received praise from one of cricket’s respected voices. His proactive leadership, combined with an aggressive and expressive style, has injected a fresh energy into England’s game. As the Ashes series progresses, all eyes will be on Ben Stokes and his continued impact on the team’s fortunes.
