Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of India’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad; Harshit Rana named replacement, Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped

Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lower back injury, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed late Tuesday night. After weeks of speculation surrounding his fitness, India’s pace spearhead has been officially sidelined from the marquee tournament. In his place, the selection committee has named 23-year-old pacer Harshit Rana in the final 15-man squad.

In another significant change, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been left out of the squad, with mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy making the final cut. “Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement. Team India has also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad,” read the BCCI’s official statement.

Bumrah, who sustained his back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was recommended a five-week recovery period by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. However, the 31-year-old seamer has not recovered in time to participate in the tournament.

Harshit Rana, who was handed his ODI debut during the recent England series, has impressed with four wickets in two matches, securing his place in the squad.

Jaiswal out, Chakaravarthy in

The exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal comes as a surprise, given that he was India’s top run-scorer across all formats in 2024. However, he has played only one ODI, with most of his runs coming in Test cricket. On the other hand, Chakaravarthy forced his way into the squad with a stellar performance in the T20I series against England, where he picked up 14 wickets in five games and was named ‘Player of the Series.’

Non-travelling substitutes

India has also named three standby players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, pacer Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Shivam Dube. These players will remain on standby and travel to Dubai if required.
