India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital in Sydney after suffering internal bleeding due to a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia. The situation, according to reports, was initially serious but is now under control, with doctors monitoring him closely.

The 31-year-old cricketer sustained the injury while taking a brilliant catch running backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey. Soon after returning to the dressing room, Iyer began to experience severe pain and fluctuating vital signs, prompting the BCCI medical team to act swiftly and rush him to the hospital.

A source close to the development told PTI:

“Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately. He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding.”

The source also revealed that Iyer’s condition was potentially life-threatening when first detected:

“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon.”

Doctors are keeping him under continuous observation, and his condition is said to be stable but delicate. Initially, Iyer was expected to be out of action for around three weeks, but due to the internal bleeding, his recovery period could be longer.

“Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket,” the source added.

Iyer is expected to remain hospitalized for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India. He is not part of India’s T20 squad, and the BCCI has yet to issue an official medical bulletin.

For now, the good news is that Shreyas Iyer is stable and responding well to treatment. The timely medical intervention from the team’s doctors has prevented what could have been a much more severe outcome. Fans across the world continue to pray for his speedy recovery.
