Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been dealt a major blow in IPL 2025 as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the tournament with an elbow fracture. In his absence, legendary captain MS Dhoni will return to lead the side for the remainder of the season.
Head Coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news ahead of CSK’s next clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, stating that Dhoni was ready to step in. “As far as replacements go, we have a few options in the squad. We haven’t zeroed in on anyone. Dhoni was ready to take over. He understood where it was coming from,” Fleming said.
Gaikwad, 28, sustained the injury during the March 30 game against Rajasthan Royals after being struck by a delivery from Tushar Deshpande. Although he featured in subsequent matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, scans later revealed a fracture, ending his season prematurely.
The loss of Gaikwad is a significant setback for CSK, who are struggling this season with four losses in their first five games. The franchise will now weigh its options carefully, both in terms of leadership and top-order stability.
