With a total of 207 runs to defend, CSK took on GT. Pressure from what the opposition were building and run- rate steadily rose meant each wicket was crucial. With part-timer Daryl Mitchell getting an edge off Vijay Shankar’s bat, Dhoni evaporated to his right to take the catch and launch the applause of spectators as they jumped for joy.
The catch not only testified to Dhoni’s athleticism and sense, but also showed what lasting influence he has achieved on the field. Despite issuing the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni’s guidance and contributions remain pivotal ones for CSK.
In his new role as captain (Gaikwad had just taken over the responsibility for his first game), ensured that CSK won their first two games. While Dhoni may be more of a mentor or a leader within the team, his experience and guidance are invaluable assets for CSK during the campaign of IPL 2024.
