MS Dhoni is set to take over the captaincy duties for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, following a season-ending injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The development was confirmed by Head Coach Stephen Fleming on April 10, ahead of CSK’s next home fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gaikwad, 28, suffered an elbow injury during CSK’s March 30 clash against Rajasthan Royals when he was struck by a delivery from Tushar Deshpande. Though he managed to play in the subsequent matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings, medical scans have now revealed a fracture, ruling him out of the remainder of the season.

The setback is a significant blow for CSK, who have endured a tough start to the tournament, losing four of their first five games. Gaikwad has been the backbone of their batting lineup, finishing as the franchise’s highest run-scorer in three of the last four editions.
With Dhoni back at the helm, the team will hope to stabilize their campaign and make a late push for playoff contention. The veteran leader, who stepped down ahead of this season, will now once again be tasked with guiding a young side through adversity.
