Mhatre injury concern grows after Hyderabad game

Ayush Mhatre could be facing a long spell out after suffering a hamstring injury during Chennai Super Kings’ 10-run loss in the run chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 in Hyderabad. Batting as an impact player, he pulled up while running between the wickets in the fourth over of the chase. The physio attended immediately, but he continued to bat despite clear discomfort.

He still managed 30 off 13 balls, but the effort came at a cost. CSK batting coach Michael Hussey later said the injury “looks like a bad one”, though scans are still pending. As much as we’re really disappointed to lose Ayush, I don’t know how long for, but it’s exciting for a new player to come in and get a chance, he added.

There is no official confirmation yet, but early signs suggest it could be serious. Mhatre has been CSK’s leading run-scorer this season with 201 runs in six matches, and his absence would be a major setback.

CSK fall short in last-over finish

CSK’s 10-run loss left them seventh on the table. Chasing 194, they ended on 184 for 8. The game went deep, but they never quite took control. Mhatre’s early momentum was cut short, and the innings lost direction soon after.

Sanju Samson fell early, while Ruturaj Gaikwad again failed to convert a start. Matthew Short and Sarfaraz Khan added runs but could not lift the rate enough.

With 18 needed off the final over, CSK still had a chance. But poor execution cost them. Jamie Overton fell trying to clear the boundary, and the rest managed only singles as SRH closed it out.

CSK face selection calls ahead of MI clash

The injury list is now a concern. MS Dhoni has not played this season due to a calf issue, while Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis are already out. Dewald Brevis had also missed games earlier.

CSK play Mumbai Indians on April 23, and there is a possibility Dhoni could return for that game. His availability could ease some pressure, especially if Mhatre is ruled out. Chennai Super Kings have a four-day gap before facing Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. Urvil Patel, batted at No. 3 last season, is a ready replacement option within the squad.

For now, CSK are dealing with uncertainty. The results have dipped, and injuries are adding to the problem. The next few days, starting with Mhatre’s scan results, could shape their campaign.
