New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has finally found a buyer in the IPL 2026 mini-auction, with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) picking him up for Rs 2 crore in the later rounds after he went unsold initially at his base price.

Henry’s return to CSK marks a familiar association, even though his IPL career has been fragmented by limited opportunities. Despite being a proven white-ball bowler at the international level, the right-arm pacer has struggled to secure a sustained run in the league.

Matt Henry’s IPL journey so far

Across stints with multiple franchises, Henry has played six IPL matches, picking up two wickets at an average of 90.50 and an economy rate of 10.65, with best figures of 1/28.

He was first part of the Chennai Super Kings squad between 2014 and 2015, though he did not feature in a match during that period. Henry later played for Punjab Kings (2017) and returned to the IPL as a replacement player in 2024, representing both CSK and Lucknow Super Giants.

Why CSK moved late

Despite going unsold in the initial rounds of the auction, CSK moved in during the accelerated phase to secure Henry at base price. With injuries, national commitments, and workload management always a concern, Henry offers experienced overseas pace depth and familiarity with CSK’s setup.

Another chance in yellow

For Matt Henry, this Rs 2 crore deal represents another opportunity to convert international pedigree into IPL impact. While his past numbers in the league remain modest, CSK’s faith suggests the franchise sees value in his experience and ability to step in when conditions and team balance demand it.
