As the IPL 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of the greatest batters in T20 history. Both legends recently lifted the T20 World Cup 2024, where Rohit led India’s run charts while Kohli delivered a match-winning knock in the final. However, following their international T20 retirement, the IPL remains their biggest stage in the shortest format.
Kohli, the all-time leading IPL run-scorer with 8,004 runs, won the Orange Cap in IPL 2024, amassing 741 runs. His ability to anchor an innings and accelerate when needed makes him a prime candidate for another dominant season. He will open his campaign with RCB’s season opener against KKR on March 22.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma—who has amassed 6,628 IPL runs—is coming off a 417-run season in IPL 2024. While not his most prolific year, the former Mumbai Indians captain has a history of stepping up in big tournaments. His first match will be a high-voltage clash against CSK on March 23.
Though Kohli has been more consistent in recent IPL seasons, Rohit’s ability to explode when in form cannot be underestimated. With both batters playing in high-scoring venues, the contest for runs will be intriguing. If Kohli carries his Orange Cap-winning form into 2025, he could once again outscore Rohit. However, if Rohit rediscovers his vintage best, he might challenge Kohli’s dominance.
