The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has laid down a comprehensive framework for Super Over rules ahead of the IPL 2025 season. The updated rules, shared with all franchise captains and managements, aim to streamline procedures in the event of a tied match.
As per the guidelines, a one-hour window has been allocated to determine the result through Super Overs. Within this timeframe, multiple Super Overs can be played until a winner is decided. The first Super Over must commence within 10 minutes of the match’s conclusion. If it results in a tie, a subsequent Super Over must begin within five minutes.
In the event of repeated ties, the process will continue until a winner is decided or the one-hour limit is about to be breached. In such cases, the match referee will inform both teams which Super Over will be the final one permitted.
Each Super Over will follow standard rules — teams get six deliveries each, and the side scoring the most runs wins. A team’s Super Over innings ends if two wickets fall. Importantly, the team that batted second in the main match will bat first in the Super Over.
The BCCI has introduced several restrictions for consecutive Super Overs:
- A batter dismissed in one Super Over is ineligible for the next.
- A bowler used in one Super Over cannot bowl in the following one.
- Teams must alternate bowling ends in each Super Over.
- Balls must be selected from a box of previously used match balls.
Each team will be allowed one unsuccessful player review per Super Over. Fielding restrictions applicable in the final over of a T20 match will also apply.
If the Super Over cannot be completed due to weather or other interruptions, the match will be declared a tie and points will be shared.
These clarified rules are expected to prevent confusion and ensure fair outcomes in tightly contested fixtures as IPL 2025 gets underway.
