Chennai’s very own Ravichandran Ashwin made a triumphant return to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025 season, marking his homecoming in style by dismissing Will Jacks in his very first over at Chepauk. The veteran off-spinner, who made his IPL debut in 2009 with CSK and played for the franchise for six seasons, received a hero’s welcome from the Chennai faithful as he stepped onto his beloved home ground once again.
A warm welcome from the Chepauk crowd
As Ashwin ran in to bowl his first over, the Chepauk crowd erupted in cheers, acknowledging the return of one of their favorite sons. The Tamil Nadu-born spinner did not disappoint, making an instant impact by removing Will Jacks for 11 (7) with a beautifully bowled carrom ball. The delivery tempted Jacks into an inside-out loft, only to be caught by Shivam Dube, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
The moment was made even more special when Ashwin, unable to contain his joy, flashed a big smile and soaked in the electrifying atmosphere. The on-field announcer’s Tamil phrase – “Anbuden ungalai Anbudan varaverkiradhu” (Chepauk welcomes you with love) – summed up the emotions of the day.
Ashwin’s journey with CSK
Ashwin first played for CSK in 2009 and was an integral part of their title-winning squads in 2010 and 2011. Over the years, he became one of the most successful spinners in IPL history, representing various teams, including Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. However, his return to CSK in IPL 2025 brings him back to his roots, where he first made a name for himself.
Ashwin’s reaction to his homecoming
Speaking after his wicket, Ashwin expressed his delight at being back in yellow:
“It feels surreal to be back here. The energy at Chepauk is something else. This is where I started my IPL journey, and to get a wicket in my first over here again is special.”
With Ashwin back in CSK colors, the “Whistle Podu” army has another reason to cheer, as their beloved spinner looks set to weave his magic once again in Chennai.
