Fans are hailing MS Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, after his incredible batting streak against Mumbai Indians in the 59th match of the IPL 2022.
On Thursday, CSK were bowled out for 97 by Mumbai Indians pacers, who ran wild with the ball.
CSK’s troubles were worsened when the Decision Review System (DRS) was unavailable owing to a power outage at one of Wankhede Stadium’s lighting towers shortly after the start of their innings, during which they lost three wickets, two of which were LBW decisions.
Captain MS Dhoni battled a heroic effort on his own to push his team to 100 runs, but he didn’t have enough help at the other end, and CSK finished with the second-lowest score in the IPL.
When Dhoni came to bat, CSK had already lost four wickets for just 17 runs and been undefeated for 36 runs in 33 balls, bringing the team’s total to 97. Dhoni smashed four boundaries and two sixes.
The second-best batsman was Dwayne Bravo (12), who shared 39 runs with Dhoni for the seventh wicket, the greatest partnership in the CSK innings. The CSK score would have been substantially lower if not for the 15 extras conceded by the Mumbai bowlers.
Daniel Sams took three wickets for 16 runs for MI, while Riley Meredith (2/27) and Kumar Kartikeya (2/22) both took two wickets.
Four-time IPL champions Chennai’s playoff dreams are on a knife’s edge, as a loss today will remove them from the race. If MS Dhoni’s team wins their remaining games and other results go their way, they have a chance to move up.

Dhoni finishes off in style! A magnificent strike into the crowd. Chennai cross 49 after 52 balls. The party starts in the dressing room and it's the Chennai captain who has been absolutely magnificent in the night for the 9th place match.

A great knock by MS Dhoni – 36* (33). Came in at No.6 when CSK were 17/4. Handled one hand well and was the highest run scorer of the CSK innings. pic.twitter.com/ssxjOq5xXr
