Sunrisers Hyderabad’s young leg-spinner, Zeeshan Ansari, announced himself in style, claiming 3/28 in his debut IPL match against Delhi Capitals. The Uttar Pradesh-born spinner dismissed both openers, Faf du Plessis and Jake Fraser-McGurk, before removing KL Rahul, making an immediate impact. However, despite his heroics, DC are well on course for victory at 119/3 in 12 overs, with Abishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs at the crease.
A long road to the IPL
Ansari’s journey to the IPL has been one of patience and persistence. He was part of India’s 2016 U-19 World Cup squad, featuring alongside stars like Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant, and Sarfaraz Khan. However, his rise to the big stage took time.
The young leg-spinner caught the attention of IPL franchises after a stellar performance in the inaugural UP T20 League, where he topped the wicket charts with 24 scalps in 12 games at an economy of 7.60. His ability to deceive batters with his googlies and variations made him a standout performer, especially in pressure situations. In the UP T20 final, he showcased his skill with a disciplined spell of 1/20 in four overs, helping Meerut Mavericks clinch the title.
Dream IPL debut, but DC in control
Given the chance to debut in IPL 2025, Ansari repaid the faith shown in him. He removed Fraser-McGurk (26) and du Plessis (22) early, disrupting DC’s strong start. Later, he claimed the big wicket of KL Rahul (17), leaving Delhi momentarily rattled.
However, despite his efforts, DC remain in command, needing just 45 more runs in eight overs. With Porel and Stubbs settled, Delhi are well-positioned to secure the win, but Ansari’s performance has given SRH a bright spot to build on.
