Following the swift conclusion of the first Test within three days, the Indian cricket team engaged in an optional practice session on Saturday before their departure to Cape Town on Sunday. Some players, accompanied by their families, are set to welcome the New Year indoors.
Simultaneously, India A players, including the unofficial first Test member Rinku Singh, are scheduled for departure on Saturday. Rinku, who joined the squad as a fielder in Centurion, filled the gap left by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s exit, reducing the Test squad from 16 to 14 members.
Reserves Ravindra Jadeja, not fully fit, and KS Bharat, along with Mukesh Kumar, provided cover for the playing XI. Rinku’s inclusion was primarily for fielding duties. With the arrival of Abhimanyu Easwaran and Avesh Khan, the team has ample cover for the second Test in Cape Town, starting on January 3. Jadeja is expected to be available for selection as well.
Amidst low spirits after the Centurion defeat, the Indian team anticipates a subdued New Year celebration in South Africa. Safety precautions, prompted by security concerns in South African cities, particularly street crimes like mugging and robbery, advise players to exercise caution when venturing out.
The advisory comes as the country grapples with rising crime statistics, with a reported per capita murder rate at its highest in 20 years, prompting the team to skip Year-End celebrations in Cape Town’s iconic Waterfront. The Indian team’s return home is scheduled for January 8.
