India made an important early breakthrough on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, thanks to a trademark Jasprit Bumrah dismissal that sent Ryan Rickelton back for 23. South Africa had started aggressively, racing to 57 without loss in just 10 overs, before Bumrah produced a moment of magic in the 10.3 over.
Bowling at 140.7 kmph, Bumrah delivered a full, angling ball from round the wicket that drifted just enough to beat Rickelton’s outside edge and crash into the stumps. The delivery drew a loud cheer from the crowd as India successfully broke the threatening 57-run opening stand.
Rickelton’s 23 off 22 balls included four boundaries and looked fluent until the one ball that moved late. Aiden Markram, meanwhile, continues at the other end on 26 off 41 as South Africa look to rebuild after the early blow.
At the fall of the wicket, South Africa were 57/1 in 10.3 overs, scoring at a brisk rate of 5.43, with India now pushing to create more pressure in the opening session.
