India’s explosive opener Shafali Verma lit up the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai with a stunning knock in the ICC Women’s World Cup Final, but her innings came to an end just short of a memorable century.
Shafali, who had dismantled the South African attack from the outset, was dismissed for 87 off 78 balls (7 fours, 2 sixes) after lofting Ayabonga Khaka straight to Sune Luus at mid-off. The dismissal brought an end to a breathtaking innings that set the tone for India in this high-stakes contest.
Earlier, India got off to a dream start with Shafali and Smriti Mandhana stitching a brilliant 104-run opening stand, becoming only the second pair in Women’s World Cup Final history to record a century partnership.
Forced to bat first after losing the toss, the duo attacked fearlessly. Shafali’s authoritative stroke-play saw her race to a fifty, while Mandhana complemented her perfectly, rotating strike and unleashing timely boundaries.
The young opener had been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Pratika Rawal, who was ruled out earlier due to injury. Shafali grabbed the opportunity with both hands — delivering a performance worthy of a World Cup final.
South Africa, however, managed to claw back momentum with Khaka breaking the stand and dismissing Shafali at a crucial juncture.
India remain in a strong position, but losing Shafali just shy of a historic hundred has given the Proteas a much-needed opening.
