Mohammed Siraj’s desperation for a wicket led to a poor DRS call in the second Test against Bangladesh, as India lost a review in an unsuccessful attempt to dismiss Najmul Hossain Shanto. The decision came after Siraj’s loud LBW appeal was turned down by the umpire, with the pacer visibly stunned. Unlike Akash Deep’s successful review earlier in the match, this review turned out to be a questionable call, ultimately costing India a review.

The Incident:

Siraj bowled a length delivery that pitched just outside the leg stump and straightened, nipping back in with extra bounce. Shanto, on his toes, missed the ball as it struck the top of his pad while he attempted to tuck it into the leg-side. Despite the lack of strong conviction from wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and fielder KL Rahul, Siraj insisted on the review, and captain Rohit Sharma eventually agreed to it.

The Failed Review:

The DRS replay showed that the ball had pitched just outside the leg stump, and ball-tracking confirmed that it was missing the stumps. Additionally, the height was also an issue, as it would have gone over the stumps. This unsuccessful review left Rohit visibly frustrated, as Siraj was certain of the wicket and ran off in celebration before the decision was denied.

Siraj’s review, in contrast to Akash Deep’s earlier success, highlighted the risk of going for desperate DRS calls. The incident emphasized the importance of careful judgment, particularly when the ball’s pitch and height could be in question.

India will be aiming to maintain their stronghold in the match, but such misjudgments may play a crucial role as they look to wrap up the series.
