In a groundbreaking move for gender equality in sports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will feature equal prize money for both women’s and men’s tournaments, making cricket the only major team sport to take this step. The total prize pool for the women’s event has been set at US$7.96 million, a staggering 225% increase from the previous edition in 2023, reflecting the ICC’s commitment to advancing the women’s game.
The champions of the 2024 tournament, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will take home $2.34 million, while the runners-up will receive $1.17 million—both seeing a 134% rise from the previous edition. Semi-finalists will also benefit, with each losing team receiving $675,000.
This move aligns with the ICC’s strategy to prioritize women’s cricket, accelerating its growth ahead of its initial 2030 target. In addition to prize equity, teams will now receive the same amount of money for match wins as their male counterparts, with $31,154 awarded for each group stage victory.
The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will feature ten teams competing in 23 matches across Dubai and Sharjah, beginning on October 3. This historic moment comes as the ICC continues to emphasize the importance of equal opportunities in sport, aiming to inspire future generations of female athletes worldwide.
