Cricket Australia has named its 21-man central contracts list for 2026–27, with a clear focus on Test depth ahead of a demanding schedule that includes the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India.

Spin focus and fresh inclusions

Off-spinner Todd Murphy has been added, while Matthew Kuhnemann retains his place as selectors strengthen spin options alongside Nathan Lyon, who is returning from hamstring surgery. The move underlines preparation for subcontinent conditions, with Lyon now 38 and workload management a factor.

Fast bowler Brendan Doggett earns his first full contract. Jake Weatherald keeps his upgraded deal, while Michael Neser returns after a strong home summer.

Among those left out are Glenn Maxwell, Usman Khawaja, who has retired, and others including Jhye Richardson and Matt Short.

Maxwell omission and long-term shift

Maxwell’s absence stands out. At 37, he remains a proven limited-overs player, but recent international returns and inconsistency in franchise cricket have raised questions. He is also not part of the current IPL season, adding to uncertainty around his short-term future at the top level.

The decision suggests Australia are moving on from some long-serving players and looking ahead. While Maxwell has not formally retired, the lack of a central contract is a clear signal that he is no longer central to immediate plans. His focus may now shift more towards franchise opportunities, if available, rather than a regular role with the national side.

Australia’s schedule over the next year includes 15 Tests across home and away conditions, followed by a potential World Test Championship final and an away Ashes in 2027. Selectors have prioritised players who can handle that workload across formats.

Players outside the list can still earn upgrades through consistent international selection, leaving the door open. For now, though, the direction is clear: a stronger emphasis on Test cricket and gradual transition away from the previous core.
