Gill, captaining India for the first time, responded to the occasion in style with a scintillating century on Day 1 at Headingley, Leeds. Batting at No. 4 for the first time in Tests — a spot once held by legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli — Gill scored 119 to put India in a commanding position against England.
It was also Gill’s maiden Test hundred in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions and silenced doubts about his overseas record. Coming into this match, Gill had never crossed 20 in his previous four innings in England.
Yuvraj, who has mentored Gill during his early years in domestic cricket, has always been a vocal supporter of the young batter’s potential. His words now carry extra weight as Gill begins a new chapter as India’s Test leader.
