Steve Smith continued his safe work in the slips during the Boxing Day Test as he moved to 211 catches in Test cricket, leaving him just three catches away from equalling Rahul Dravid’s tally of 210 and three short of the all-time record held by Joe Root (214).
With Australia putting England under pressure early, Smith’s sharp catch to dismiss Zak Crawley added another milestone to his remarkable fielding record.
Most catches in Test cricket (fielder):
Joe Root – 214
Steve Smith – 211
Rahul Dravid – 210
Mahela Jayawardene – 205
Jacques Kallis – 200
Smith now sits second on the all-time list and is within touching distance of becoming the most prolific catcher in Test cricket history, with the remainder of the Melbourne Test and the series still to play.
